THE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM WE ENJOY MIGHT BE IN JEOPARDY
Religion
In our country, we profess "FREEDOM OF RELIGION." The framers however never intended America to have "Freedom FROM Religion", but rather, that the "State" would never create or adopt a "State Religion" as is the case in a number of countries. We more or less subscribe to the practice of "Live and let live" because we have never before been faced with the possibility of actually losing many of the Freedoms we enjoy. The following story was adapted from Dr. Peter Hammond's book: Slavery, Terrorism and Islam: The Historical Roots and Contemporary Threat. It certainly gives us much to ponder!

KEEP YOUR FORK, THE BEST IS YET TO COME
Religion
We Lutherans, are big on congregational dinners. It is sort of customary that the ladies of the church put together a "lunch" for the family and friends of the deceased who gather after the funeral service. This provides a means of celebrating the departed’s life on earth and the sharing of cherished memories with one another. While funerals are a time of sadness, they also are a time of joy for those who know their loved one has entered an Everlasting Life which is far better than the one they left. This is a thought provoking message with a point....or you might say, FOOD FOR THOUGHT..

SOME LUTHERAN PASTORS ARE GETTING SCREWED BY THEIR CONGREGATIONS
Religion
There is a growing trend in this country for members of congregations who, for one reason or another, have a disagreement on a spiritual or secular matter with their Pastor, to organize a mean spirited, gossip laden, outright brutal campaign to dump him. Most usually there is no Christian basis for these acts and actions. Such was the case recently at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Emma, Missouri and such is the case now in progress at Saint Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hampton, Nebraska. The Rev. Clint Poppe, who until recently served as First Vice President of the Nebraska District of the LCMS in addition to being Pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, wrote a paper entitled "Not a Good Fit" which originally appeared in Logia, A Journal of Lutheran Theology. Since that periodical is read for the most part by professional church workers and since it deals with the subject at hand, with Poppe’s permission, the paper is reprinted here verbatim for wider attention. Lutheran laymen, Called and Ordained Servants of the Word, take due notice of the contents thereof and govern yourselves accordingly

PASTORS GET LITTLE SUPPORT FROM THE LUTHERAN CHURCH MISSOURI SYNOD
Religion
This will be the first in a short series concerning the growing trend for the leadership of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LC-MS) to abandon pastors when being abused by congregational trouble makers. While this may cross synodical lines, as a confirmed Lutheran and member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, I have learned of the lackluster leadership in the Nebraska District and failures of the District President to fully exercise the power of his office when circumstances clearly warrant a bit of "tough love."

NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD
Religion
It is Thanksgiving Day, 2007 and I have pondered most of last night and all of today the answer I would give to the question my Pastor asked which was the core of his sermon - "What are you thankful for?" Since the schedules of our family members are so complicated, we elected to assemble on Friday rather than Thursday so as to allow more of our bunch to be present. My "Dearly Beloved" and I attended a church service on Wednesday evening due to professional obligations we had on Thursday. I had concluded long ago my blessings have been so many it would take hours just to scratch the surface of all I personally have for which to be thankful. Thus, I try to express my thanks and gratitude daily to my God for the countless things He has done for me and my family. The older I get I knew if I stored all of such up for Thanksgiving day I would likely forget or overlook something important. What a wonderful thing vansopinion.com is, for it will allow me to tell the world a number of the things for which I continually give thanks..

GOD DOES INDEED ANSWERS PRAYER
Religion
By a strange coincidence, this very morning, I listened to a great sermon having to do, in part, with paying attention to what God is saying to each of us. We have all seen the picture of Jesus "Knocking at the door." Far too often, for one reason or another, we don’t answer the knock. My pastor told about a little girl who, when asked by her teacher after seeing the particular picture, why the people inside didn’t answer the knock. The little girl’s reply was, "Maybe the television was too loud." For some reason, I think I heard a knock at my door. While I don’t normally forward messages I receive by e-mail "to every person on my list", I am motivated to share the following story which I received today. Why? Because I strongly believe "God is alive and well" and He might be using me to share the story, not with the ten people as requested, but with the thousands who read vansopinion.com. I am not one bit ashamed to tell the world about my faith in the Saving Grace of my Lord Jesus Christ. Yes indeed, God answers prayers!

WILL LINCOLN AREA LUTHERANS BECOME APRIL FOOLED
Religion
It is first important for my readers to note that April 1, often called "April Fools Day" is a special day for me for many reasons. Five years ago, on that date, the first story on vansopinion.com was aired in cyber space. Several years before that, on the same date, my five-foot two, eyes of blue Mom passed away, a lady who was never afraid to express her opinions. This year, on that date two similar, yet very different things will occur, one involving one of the best Lutheran Pastors I have ever had the pleasure of knowing will celebrate his tenth anniversary as pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, the other involving a former Lutheran Pastor who violated the code of conduct the Bible prescribes for ministers. The latter was allowed to resign his pastoral office rather than possibly being "defrocked." Now, he is trying to start up a new church in Lincoln called the "River of Life Christian Community Church advertised to be holding its first meeting on April 1st. The purpose of this article is to put a few cards face up on the table so that good people who might be inclined to join that church may be fully informed so they can make up their own as to whether or not Dan Cloeter should ever again be called "Pastor."

REV. RUSSELL SOMMERFELD SHOULD STEP DOWN
Religion
Having attained three score and ten, I’ll be the first to admit I probably make most so-called religious conservatives look liberal. For the most part though, I try to keep the few grievances I have relating to "church politics" to myself. It is only when a man like Russell Sommerfeld, President of the Nebraska District - Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), in my opinion, is so glaringly incompetent as an administrator and an embarrassment to MY DENOMINATION that I am compelled by conscience to tell the world why I strongly feel he should step down and return to the parish ministry where he possibly can do a respectable job without further harming the district.

HAVE A SAFE AND MERRY CHRISTMAS
Religion A good friend sent me this article and I want to share it with all the good folks who read vansopinion.com. At a time when we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we need to take a bit of time to thank Him for our friends and families as well as for the guarantee of Life Eternal through faith in Him. These are the true gifts of the season. May there be peace within you and may you trust God has put you exactly where you are meant to be for a purpose - His purpose. "I believe friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

RELIGIOUS HUMOR THAT'S NON-DENOMINATIONAL
Religion Since there will be forthcoming later this week several articles in vansopinion.com dealing with subjects involving church scandals and cover-ups, I thought it might be well to kick off the week with a bit of church humor. Enjoy these stories then buckle your seat belt. Could the following be true stories? Possibly so....possibly not, but funny they are! Enjoy.
