FEEDBACK FROM LOCAL PAPER'S PUBLISHER
Posted on Thursday, May 27 @ 14:55:27 CDT by van

News and Views As you will note in the "feedback" sent to vansopinion.com by William Johnston, the publisher of the Lincoln Journal Star newspaper, his purpose was not necessarily constructive criticism, but rather a tainted gouge. From my memory, which admittedly would not qualify for "admissible evidence" in a court of law, I mentioned how the Journal and the Star became one in the previous article in this forum. Well, I was wrong....sort of. Since I want the readers of this web site to get the "truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth" I'll defer to Johnston's e-mail, print the relevant part thereof and those who delve in trivia can correct their thoughts and minds accordingly.

Here is what Bill sent to me as "feedback."

"It is always good to know the Journal Star is giving you a topic to discuss. I know you usually don't let facts get in the way of your opinion, but there are some glaring inaccuracies in your news an views column. The Seacrest family never owned both the Journal and the Star. The Seacrest family owned the State Journal and the Evening Journal. Lee Enterprises purchased the Lincoln Star in 1930 from HE Gooch and LB Tobin. In 1931 Lee Enterprises reached an agreement with J. Seacrest to form a joint operation of the Lincoln newspapers. I believe the Sea crest family owned 50.25% and Lee owned 49.75%. That agreement lasted until 1995 when Lee purchased the Seacrest portion of the agreement. Lee now owns 100%"

He want on to say, "Again, I realize facts are not important to you, only opinion." Now folks, here is the top dog barking at the moon, figuratively speaking. More accurately put, "The kettle calling the pot black."

Far too often any similarity to the truth which seldom permeates the Lincoln Journal Star, is purely accidental. Take a look at any day's "Opinion" page and you will find more Democratic droppings than after the paper is used to line a bird cage.

Years back, I had coffee with Bill when, I believe, he was relatively new in his current position. I actually thought he would bring new leadership and a sense of fairness to our local rag, but such assessment turned out to be just my opinion rather than a fact.
